We romanticize the fifth set as a test of heart, a contest of will where the player who wants it more prevails. That story is inspiring and mostly wrong. By the time a match reaches its final set, the deciding factor is rarely desire. It is physiology. The fifth set is a fight against your own biochemistry, and the winner is usually the one whose body betrays them last.

The fuel problem

The body stores carbohydrate as glycogen, and glycogen is the premium fuel for the explosive efforts tennis demands. The problem is that the tank is finite. Across four or five hours of repeated sprints, a player can substantially deplete their glycogen stores, and once that happens, the body is forced to rely more heavily on slower, less efficient energy pathways.

The visible symptoms are unmistakable: the first step gets slower, the serve loses a few miles per hour, and the once-automatic footwork starts to require conscious thought. This is why players obsessively eat and drink during changeovers. They are not snacking. They are refueling a tank that empties faster than it can be filled.

The fifth set is often won at the changeovers of the third. What you put in the tank early determines whether it is empty late.

Heat, sweat, and the salt equation

Stacked on top of fuel depletion is thermoregulation. Muscles generate enormous heat, and the body's only real cooling system is sweat. In hot conditions a player can lose a startling volume of fluid, and with it, electrolytes, particularly sodium.

This is the direct road to cramping. A cramp is not weakness or lack of toughness. It is, in large part, a neuromuscular malfunction driven by fluid and electrolyte imbalance combined with fatigue. When a player seizes up in the fifth, their will is intact. Their sodium and their fatigued muscle control are not.

Fine motor skills go first

Here is the cruel part. Endurance fatigue does not just slow you down. It degrades precision. The fine motor control required to serve to a specific spot or thread a passing shot depends on fresh, well-coordinated muscle firing. As fatigue accumulates, that coordination frays, and the margins shrink.

This is why the tennis in a long fifth set can look ragged even between two great players. Serves that found the corner in set one drift toward the middle. Returns that were crisp start floating. It is not a collapse of skill. It is the predictable decay of a tired nervous system.

How the great endurance players win

The players who thrive in five-setters are not simply more determined. They are better engineered, and they prepare specifically for the physiological war:

  • They train the recovery system, not just top speed, so their heart rate drops faster between points and they refuel more efficiently.
  • They manage energy tactically, taking a few extra seconds between points, shortening rallies when possible, and refusing to sprint for genuinely lost causes.
  • They arrive hyper-fueled and hydrated, treating nutrition in the days before a match as part of the tactics.
  • They own economical technique, wasting less energy per shot so their tank lasts longer.

The reframe

Understanding the physiology does not diminish the drama of a great five-setter. It deepens it. What looks like a triumph of spirit is really a triumph of preparation meeting biology under extreme stress. The player still standing in the fifth is not the one who wanted it most. It is the one who, months earlier, built a body that could keep firing when everyone else's had run out of fuel, water, and precision. Heart matters. But heart runs on glycogen.
