Advanced stats have a reputation for being impenetrable — a wall of acronyms that fans throw at each other to win arguments. They don't have to be. A small handful of ideas do almost all the work, and once they click, you can't unsee them. Here's the beginner's tour, no math degree required.

Start with efficiency, not totals

The first mental shift: stop asking how much and start asking how efficiently. Twenty points means little without knowing how many shots it took.

  • True Shooting Percentage (TS%) is the single most useful stat for a beginner. It rolls twos, threes, and free throws into one number that answers: how efficiently did this player score, per scoring attempt? A high TS% means a player got a lot out of every shot. It correctly rewards the three-point shooter and the foul-drawer, both of which raw field-goal percentage misses.

If you learn one advanced stat, learn this one. It quietly corrects most bad scoring arguments.

Context stats: usage and pace

Efficiency alone can mislead — it's easy to be efficient on low volume. Two ideas add the missing context:

  • Usage rate estimates how much of the offense runs through a player when he's on the floor. High usage and high efficiency is the mark of a star; the two normally trade off, so doing both is rare and valuable.
  • Per-possession stats ("per 100 possessions") let you compare players across fast and slow teams fairly. A fast team racks up more counting stats simply by playing more possessions. Per-possession numbers strip that out.

The whole point of advanced stats is context. Raw totals tell you what happened; rate and efficiency stats tell you how good it actually was.

The impact stats, handled with care

Then there's the family of stats that try to answer the big question: how much did this player help his team win?

  • Plus-minus is the simplest: the point differential while a player is on the floor. Useful, but noisy — it's polluted by teammates and matchups.
  • Net rating applies the same idea per 100 possessions.
  • All-in-one metrics (the various "win" and "impact" models) attempt to isolate one player's contribution from his teammates'. They're powerful but imperfect, and they disagree with each other, which should make you humble about any single number.

The key with impact stats is to treat them as evidence, not verdicts. When several independent metrics agree a player is elite, believe them. When they conflict, that disagreement is itself information — usually a sign the player's value is genuinely hard to measure.

How to actually use them

You don't need to compute anything. You need a few habits:

  • Check TS% before arguing about a scorer.
  • Glance at usage to see if efficiency came on real volume.
  • Use per-possession stats to compare across teams.
  • Treat impact metrics as a jury, not a judge.

Advanced stats aren't here to replace watching the game. They're here to keep your eyes honest — to catch the biases that a highlight reel and a box score quietly build in. Start with True Shooting, and let the rest follow.
