- Stick detail: an active stick in the lane that breaks up a pass before a defender ever has to commit his body
- Skating backward as fast as most people skate forward, so he never gets beaten wide

Why the numbers hide him
Traditional stats punish this player. He starts in the defensive zone, so his scoring chances are low by design. He plays the toughest opponents, so his on-ice results look worse than a sheltered puck-mover who feasts on soft minutes. This is exactly why analytics matter here: you have to adjust for zone starts and quality of competition to see that he is winning his matchup by a wide margin.
Judge a shutdown defenseman by the company he keeps on the ice. If he is out there against the best every night and the scoreboard stays quiet, he is doing the job perfectly.
Why he wins in the playoffs
In the regular season, offense is cheap and depth carries you. In a seven-game series against elite opposition, the ability to take one dangerous line and switch it off becomes decisive. A coach who can trust one pair to neutralize the other team's stars can free his own scorers to feast elsewhere. That is a championship equation.

The shutdown defenseman will never win the popularity vote and rarely wins the individual hardware.
