Watch a modern broadcast and you will hear a language the old scorecard never taught: OPS, wRC+, WAR, FIP. It can feel like a wall. It is not. Every one of these numbers exists to fix a specific flaw in an old statistic — and once you know which flaw each one solves, the whole vocabulary clicks into place.
Why the classic stats fall short
Start with the trio everyone grew up on. Each has a hidden problem:
- Batting average treats a single and a home run identically and ignores walks entirely — as if drawing a walk were nothing.
- RBIs depend heavily on the hitters in front of you. Bat behind on-base machines and your RBI total inflates through no skill of your own.
- Pitcher wins depend on run support and bullpen help — things a pitcher does not control. A brilliant start can end in a loss because the offense scored nothing.
Sabermetrics is not about worshipping numbers. It is about measuring what a player actually did, separated as much as possible from what his teammates and luck did around him.
The hitting numbers
OPS (on-base plus slugging) is the friendly first step. It adds on-base percentage — how often you avoid making an out — to slugging percentage — how many bases you accumulate. It rewards walks and extra-base hits, the two things batting average ignores. It is crude but a huge improvement.
wRC+ is OPS grown up. It measures total offensive value, adjusts for the ballpark (a homer in a hitter’s park is worth less than one in a pitcher’s park), and scales everything so that 100 is exactly league average. A 130 wRC+ means 30 percent better than average; a 90 means 10 percent worse. One number, park-adjusted, instantly comparable across eras and stadiums.
The single most useful habit for a new fan: when you see a “+” stat, 100 is average and higher is better. wRC+, OPS+, ERA+ all work that way.
The pitching numbers
FIP (fielding independent pitching) asks a sharp question: what if we judged a pitcher only on the things fielders cannot affect — strikeouts, walks, and home runs? ERA blames the pitcher for weak grounders that find holes and rewards him for line drives caught at the wall. FIP strips the defense out and often predicts a pitcher’s future better than his own ERA.
BABIP (batting average on balls in play) is the luck detector. Once a ball is put in play, whether it becomes a hit is surprisingly random year to year. A pitcher with a very low BABIP is often getting lucky and due to regress; a hitter with a very high one may be about to cool off.
The one number to rule them all
WAR — wins above replacement — is the sport’s attempt to answer one question: how many more wins is this player worth than a freely available minor-league fill-in? It bundles hitting, base-running, fielding, and (for pitchers) run prevention into a single figure denominated in wins.
WAR is not gospel. Different sites calculate it differently, and small gaps between players are noise. But as a rough map — an 6-win player is a superstar, a 2-win player is a solid regular, a 0-win player is replaceable — it is the most useful single number in baseball.
How to actually use all this
You do not need to memorize formulas. You need three instincts:
- Prefer stats that isolate the player from his teammates and his defense.
- Prefer stats that adjust for context — ballpark, era, league.
- Distrust small samples and extreme BABIP; they usually regress.
Carry those three habits into any broadcast and the alphabet soup stops being intimidating. It becomes what it was always meant to be: a clearer, fairer picture of who is actually good.
